Derek Jeter's mental approach to baseball is one that every player, coach and parent should take notice of.

Derek Jeter's mental approach to baseball is one that every player, coach and parent should take notice of. He is a true American Sports Hero yet he does not consider himself bigger than the game itself. His words and quotes reflect his attitude, his commitment, and his love of the game.

What can all baseball coaches learn from Derek Jeter's mental approach to the game? He is one of the most "decorated" Major League baseball players in the past decade. But, more impressive than his talent is his ability to keep the game in proper perspective mentally. He is humble. He knows how important the game is to him. He appreciates the opportunity he has to play the game and he considers it an honor to wear the pin stripes. In this article I present Derek Jeter quotes that I feel reflect how every player should approach the mental part of the game.

Derek Jeter helped the New York Yankees win the 2009 Major League Baseball World Series. The win earned the franchise's 27th World Series Championship. In 2009 Jeter made his 10th All-Star Team. The list of honors and awards Jeter received in 2009 is extremely impressive. He Won his 5th World Series Ring. He became the all-time Yankee leader in hits. He won his fourth Gold Glove. He won his fourth Silver Slugger award by batting .334 with a .406 On-Base-Percentage. He won the Hank Aaron Award as the best hitter in the AL. He received the Roberto Clemente Award for his commitment to service in the community. He was honored with Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year for his overall accomplishments in 2009. But, what is more impressive that his honors and accolades is his mental approach to the game.

Derek Jeter considers himself blessed to play the game of baseball. He does not look at himself like many pro athletes do. Many pro athletes consider it a privilege for the game to have them as a player. They put themselves on a pedestal above the game itself.

All coaches should be happy if they players take the same mental approach to baseball as Jeter does. Here I take three Derek Jeter quotes that I feel reflect the proper mental attitude for any player at any level to have toward the game.

Quote #1 This quote reflects Jeter's thoughts about the importance of having fun and enjoying the game.

"You have got to have fun. Regardless of how you look at it, we are playing a game. It is a business, it is our job, but I do not think you can do well unless you are having fun." Derek Jeter

It is refreshing to see a Major League Baseball All-Star like Jeter feels that having fun should be a priority. I feel that more players, coaches, and parents should share that same sentiment. Many coaches and players forget the fact that baseball is just a game and games are meant to be played for fun!

Quote #2 This quote shows that Jeter values defensive play and pitching as keys to winning.

"That is how you win - pitching and defense." Derek Jeter

This quote is coming from one of the best hitters in Major League Baseball History, yet he is makes it clear that he considers pitching and defense the keys to winning. Maybe some coaches and players should put more emphasis on the defensive aspects of the game.

Quote #3 This quote reflects how important Jeter thinks it is to keep working and improving. This quote shows the importance of staying focused and staying "hungry".

"We just want to win. That is the bottom line. I think a lot of times people may become content with one championship or a little bit of success, but we do not really reflect on what we have done in the past. We focus on the present."Derek Jeter

As you can see from Jeter's quotes, he does not put himself or his success above the game or his team. He shows a commitment to continue improving and working hard. His love for the game is obvious. He is an inspiration to anyone that watches him play.

I hope that you enjoyed this article. Thanks for taking the time to read it. Have a great day, Nick.

Stephen James Strasburg was born on July 20th, 1988 in Santee, California. He has said that his grandmother influenced him at a young and helped him develop his pitching skills by frequently playing catch with him. He attended San Diego State University where he was a pitcher on the school's baseball team. As a sophomore his talent as a pitcher was evident by his unbelievable 134 strikeouts in 98 innings. He also pitched two shutout games and struck out a record 23 batters in a Mountain West Conference game against the University of Utah. In the 1989 season his abilities again were proven by his achievements such as a 13-1 season that included a no hitter game and a whopping 195 strikeouts in 109 innings.

On June 9th, 2009 Strasburg was drafted by the Washington Nationals as the number one pick of the Major League Baseball Draft. On August 17th almost two months after being drafted by the Nationals he signed a record breaking $15.1 million dollar four year contract with the team. On October 16th, 2009 Strasburg was the starting pitcher for the Desert Dogs minor league team, his first professional minor league game. In 2010 he was named to the Double-A Harrisburg Senators team and played his first game with the team on April 16th. Shortly after on May 4th, 2010 he was advanced to the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs. Again his performance on the field was exemplary.

Stephen Strasburg made his major league debut on June 8th, 2010 playing against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In what was called the most hyped pitching debut the game has ever seen, Strasburg pitched 7 innings only allowing two runs with no walks and a new strikeout record for the team, 14 strikeouts. In his first three starts as a major league player Stephen struck out 32 batters setting a new major league record for the most strikeouts in a pitchers first three starts. At the age of 22 years old this young man is the baseball player to watch. His talent on the field will surely give him a nomination and acceptance to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Parity truly has arrived in Major League Baseball. Amazingly, nine teams in the National League are within striking distance of a playoff spot. In the American League, eight teams have a legitimate shot at reaching the post-season. That's 17 of 30 total teams with meaningful baseball to play over the last two and a half months of the season. However, there are still many people who insist baseball needs a salary cap. They cry that MLB does not provide a level playing field for all teams. But would a salary cap really improve Major League Baseball?

Over the past 15 years, MLB has witnessed a tremendous change in league wide competitiveness. Most of this can be attributed to realignment and a new playoff system that was devised after the strike in 1994. As most of you know, each league went from having two divisions to having three. Four new playoff teams were added - two in each league. As a result, pennant races have become more exciting. The realignment accomplished exactly what MLB wanted; more teams alive and kicking for a longer portion of the season. This, in turn, has generated more fan interest leading to more ticket sales and higher TV ratings. Of course, there were other rules introduced which helped make the regular season more meaningful and dramatic.

Even though there is no specific salary cap in MLB, there are new ways in which the league has created more balance amongst the big, medium, and small market teams; for example, the creation of Major League Baseball Advanced Media (mlb.com). Started in 2001, baseball's digital arm has found success in generating new sources of income for all teams, since the money made by their endeavors are split evenly amongst MLB's 30 clubs. Furthermore, MLB implemented a luxury tax whereby teams that spend money over a specific threshold must pay a tax that is then divided up amongst the other teams. These, along with a few other revenue sharing methods, have allowed medium and small market teams to sign their young talent to longer-term contracts. Of course, not all teams reinvest this money into their teams, as we will explore in future posts.

As I mentioned on this blog two weeks ago, parity in baseball is also being achieved by an infusion of young talent that is more Major League ready than ever before. Teams with smaller payrolls have been willing and able to take advantage of this cheap labor, therefore becoming more competitive and financially efficient at the same time. Even teams who have fallen out of the pennant race are generating excitement thanks to young phenoms who give fans hope of a bright future. Just think Stephen Strasburg in Washington, and Mike Stanton in Florida.

When it comes to those who favor a salary cap for baseball, they often point to the success of the National Football League, which implements a strict ceiling on how much money each team is allowed to spend on players (excluding this upcoming season). The reasoning holds that if richer teams cannot outspend poorer ones in a disproportionate way, then talent will be more widely dispersed amongst the 32 teams. While there is some truth to this, it is far from the only reason for the NFL's parity and success. For example, the NFL benefits from a shorter schedule, which naturally creates closer records in the standings. In addition, injuries, along with the overall nature of the game itself, provide more uncertainty and add an element of unpredictability to the season.

But let's go back to the original debate; does baseball need a salary cap? There are legitimate cases to be made for both sides of the argument. As you can probably tell, I don't think there needs to be a hard cap similar to the NFL (Yes, I am a Yankee fan, but really that's not why I think this way). I believe through creativity and the development of terrific young talent, Major League Baseball will continue seeing great pennant races and league wide parity.

Going forward over the next few days and weeks, I will examine several teams from around the league. I will try and show how teams from different markets - small, medium, and large - thrive or fail in today's economic environment. Baseball is on the upswing without a salary cap. Don't let anyone tell you different. ?

Have you ever noted that when you wear a baseball cap to keep the sun out of your face that the back of your neck gets burned? Have you ever noticed that when you wear a baseball cap you end up offending a close friend who hates that team and loves another

Have you ever noted that when you wear a baseball cap to keep the sun out of your face that the back of your neck gets burned? Have you ever noticed that when you wear a baseball cap you end up offending a close friend who hates that team and loves another? Well, we can fix all this and the solution is quite simple; all we have to do is make the baseball caps go both ways. This way you can put the logos for your two-favorite teams on it.

Not only would this help you shield yourself from that so-called global warming and sun burns, but it would also help the base ball cap makers sell more baseball caps too. You see, if you like ball caps, you can still collect those old one-way hats and hang them up in your sports room, but for going out on the town, now you'll have the best of both worlds, and both of your favorite ball teams too.

Since most of these hats are made in China and places who've never heard of the teams you support or love, the cost is very low, so making a two-way hat would only cost a little bit more. Instead of $4 to $10 for the hat, your retail cost might be $7-12 - just a little more than you are paying now, with the opportunity of supporting two very fine baseball teams.

And if you only have one favorite team, get that logo on both sides? It's entirely up to you, and this is why I believe some smart entrepreneur will think of this and start offering the "Two-Way Baseball Cap" so, please consider all this.

Calvin Edwin Ripkin, Jr was born August 24th, 1960 in Harve de Grace, Maryland. His father, Cal Sr. was a veteran baseball coach and it should be noted that he coached the Baltimore Oriole baseball team in the late 1980's. Having grown up in a baseball family it was a natural transition for the younger Ripkin to follow a professional career in the sport.

In 1982 as a member of the Baltimore Orioles Cal Jr. played both third base and shortstop and received the American League's Rookie of the Year Award for his 28 home runs that season. From that first year in 1982 to 1991 Cal Jr. hit a minimum of 20 home runs each year, a record that has not been matched or beaten by any other shortstop.

In 1987 his father Cal Sr. became coach for the Baltimore Orioles and the first manager in baseball history to manage both his sons on the team, Cal Jr. and Billy Ripken. Cal Jr. was called the Iron Man because of his dedication to his team and the sport. He always showed for practices and would never leave the lineup in a game even when he was injured. Because of his steadfast performance he beat Lou Gehrig's 56 year old record for playing 2,030 consecutive games by playing his 2031st game on September 6th, 1995. His record stands today at a phenomenal 2,632.

His 20 year career with the Baltimore Orioles ended he retired in October 2001. Cal Ripkin, Jr a career batting average of.276 with 3,184 hits, 431 home runs and 1,695 runs batted in. He was also a 19 time All-Star selection, 1 time World Series champion, won the Gold Glove Award 2 times, 8 time winner of the Silver Slugger Award and a 2 time American League Most Valuable Player. Cal Jr. was also a 2 time All-Star MLB Most Valuable Player and received the Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig awards. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
